THERE was no question over what everyone was doing with their Bank Holiday weekend in Sutton Bridge, where the annual gala and companion dog show attracted hundreds of people.

The two events created a happy atmosphere and resulted in a “useful surplus after costs”, according to acting chairman of Sutton Bridge Community Centre committee Peter Clery.

The gala at the Memorial Park included a large car boot sale, stalls, side shows, children’s races, a Lincoln Red heifer for the children to pat, and all the fun people have come to expect of the gala.

Meanwhile the dog show brought in 68 entries competing in 24 classes, with dogs ranging from a 3lb Chihuahua to a 200lb Leonberger. The overall winner was a black cocker spaniel called Kerira, but Peter has no record on the owner’s name and would like her to get in touch – on 01406 350848. She was presented with the Leeson’s Garage trophy.

Peter said the junior handling class provided the most amusement, adding: “It was uncertain in one case whether the dog knew more about the job than the little boy leading him. The dog, a Norfolk Terrier, came last, but it didn’t seem to matter.”
