Great-grandparents Bill and Joan Ward are in their eighties but they know how to keep their romance alive.
Bill was serving in Germany with REME (Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers) when he popped the big question to Joan, who was manager of the NAAFI.
He proposed on Coronation Day in 1953.
Bill (81) said: “She had 2,500 men to choose from and she got me.”
The couple married three months after their engagement and are making a sentimental journey to the place where their romance began all those years ago with a cruise along the Rhine.
Bill and Joan (80), from Sutton Bridge, received a message from the Queen on their big day on Thursday, which they have already framed, and threw a big party.
Joan said: “We had a wonderful day. We have really had 60 good years except for illness on and off.”
The couple spent their working lives in business, first moved to this area in 1962 and settled here for good in 2000.
They have a daughter, a grandson and two great grandchildren. Photo: SG260913-141TW
