THE LOVE between mother and son was the driving force behind a charity football match in Spalding for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Spalding Sunday League side Punchbowl FC lost 2-0 to a select XI team of players from the Spalding area, before both teams were joined by family and friends for a barbecue, raffle and live music at The Punchbowl in New Road, Spalding.

The match was organised by Punchbowl FC boss Gavin Phillips whose mum, Karen (52), from Deeping St Nicholas, had breast cancer about five years ago and about £600 has been raised so far.

Gavin said: “It was something I always wanted to do and the fact that so much has been raised is something I’m ecstatic about.”
