Gavin Miller previews two upcoming films
ROBOCOP (12A): The 1987 cult-classic gets rebooted for this generation. Virtual unknown Joel Kinnaman (Safe House) takes over the role of Alex Murphy (made famous by Peter Weller) – a loving husband, father and all-round good cop – who is critically injured in the line of duty, and gets turned into a part-man, part-robot police officer by multinational conglomerate OmniCorp.
As the greedy corporation envision a ‘Robocop’ in every city across the world – and billions for their shareholders in the process – they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice.
Gary Oldman, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch) and Jay Baruchel (This is the End) – and of course classic robot-villain ED-209 – complete a very impressive looking cast list.
Be prepared for the legendary catchphrase “Dead or alive, you’re coming with me” to once again adorn the big screen . . .
THE DALLAS BUYERS CLUB (15): Matthew McConaughey (Mud and Killer Joe) cemented his recent hot-streak by snagging a Golden Globe for Best Actor – with this critically-acclaimed turn as a hustling AIDS victim who plays the system to get life-saving medication. Looks like it will be a shoot-out with 12 Years a Slave’s Chiwetel Ejiofor, after McConaughey notched an Oscar nomination for Best Actor as well.
