SHOWCASE CINEMAS PETERBOROUGH, FROM THURSDAY

After a 20-year wait we’ve finally got a sequel to one of the biggest blockbusters of the Nineties – which redefined the popcorn-munching movie event genre.

Some of the original players from the much-loved first film – Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A Fox, Brent Spiner, Judd Hirsch –return to Roland Emmerich’s (who’s also back) sci-fi actioner follow-up after a two decade hiatus.

Will Smith (who decided to go with Deadshot in Suicide Squad) won’t be returning – and will reportedly be killed off before the events of this film – but rising stars Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), Maika Monroe (It Follows) and Jessie Usher are added to the alien ass-kicking mix.

‘We always knew they were coming back’ is one of the taglines of the movie, and that the aliens do – bigger, stronger and on an unprecedented scale – which puts the world on the brink of extinction.

With the nations of Earth having collaborated on an immense defence strategy using the recovered alien technology left behind after the last devastating invasion (known as the War of 1996), humanity must once again stand together to try to defeat this extra terrestrial menace.
