A government consultation examining trailer weights and speeds is finally under way.

It follows years of lobbying by the NFU and other organisations which believe the current limits to not reflect the capacity of modern tractors and trailers.

The 90-day consultation will seek comments on increasing the weight of agricultural trailers, currently viewed by many as inadequate for modern farming, and on increasing the train weight of tractor and trailer combinations to 31-37 tonnes, depending on the number of axles and type of suspension.

Views will also be gathered on raising the speed limit for agricultural tractors from 20mph to 25mph.
