Open Farm Sunday has become an established date in the diary.
For one Sunday in early June (June 8 this year), more than 40 farmers in the East Midlands will open their gates and welcome visitors to find out more about food, farming and the countryside.
Open Farm Sunday’s been going since 2006 and each year since then, new farms have taken part with different sectors of the industry on display for one day.
There are many different reasons for farmers to open to the public, from better community relations, to showing how farming works or just raising sales in a farm shop or butchery.
Each Open Farm Sunday event is different, just as each farm is different, but there are a variety of fun and educational activities you can offer: a nature trail or guided farm walk will help show how farming benefits nature; a quiz can point out interesting facts along the way; local food producers might come and sell their produce, do a barbecue or sell farmhouse ice cream.
