More than 55,000 new entrants to agriculture over the last five years has brought the total employed in the sector to 166,672.

Current figures, from the Office of National Statistics, show a large increase on last year.

Interestingly, the largest rise has been among women, with three times as many now identified within the industry as in 2009.

There have also been large numbers of college leavers among the new entrants, something welcomed by the NFU.
