Heavier farm equipment and “flotation tyres” are leading to “concrete soils” that could be contributing to the flooding problem, believes Shane Ward, the first director of the Soil and Water Management Centre.

He said UK farmed soils are “definitely not as free draining” as they used to be, and said: “This is resulting in more run-off with more water entering watercourses and increasing the risk of floods.”
