Anglian Water has splashed the cash on a £5.7million ‘first-time’ sewerage scheme which will allow hundreds of homes to ditch their garden cesspits.

The company is paying out some £14,250 per house for 400 of its customers in Saracen’s Head, Holbeach Clough and Holbeach Bank.

All 400 householders have been given the chance to connect to the main sewer and, so far, 200 people have opted to do so.

Anglian Water spokesman John Clare said the Water Industry Act places a duty on water companies to provide mains sewerage “where necessary”.

A resident of Holbeach Bank had requested mains sewerage and the company investigated the need before deciding to implement the scheme.

He said: “Often there is an issue where the water table is very high and that does mean cesspits are not necessarily as effective as they should be and they discharge to land.”

The project is due to be completed in March and includes a vacuum pumping station in Washway Road as well as an upgrade to the treatment works at Holbeach to cope with the extra flow. People who connect must pay for pipe work on their own land.
