Young chefs from Donington’s Thomas Cowley High School cooked up a treat for judges as part of their ninth annual “Team Challenge”.
This year saw nine food technology students from Year 10 team up with a volunteer member of staff to compete to prepare the best two-course meal for two people in one hour. The event was hosted by students Charlie Smith and Amy Drakard.
Marks were awarded for skills used, garnish and decorating, teamwork, appearance, colour, texture, flavour, the menu, presentation, time management, hygiene and safety.
The judges – Sally Elkington from Lincs FM and Steve Cottrell from Boston College – deliberated for quite some time over the delicious meals served up before announcing the winner as Jamie Carrott, backed up by Miss Ellie Livesey.
Their winning menu was pork wellington with black pudding and creamy apple sauce followed by chocolate fondant.
Special mention for their deserts went to Liam Mann and head Mr Martyn Taylor for their ginger and pineapple pudding and the lemon and ginger ice cream in brandy snap baskets of Toby Scott and Mrs Majer.
