TWO terms of studying the Vikings came to a head with a pitched battle on the school field for 90 pupils at Spalding’s Monkshouse Primary School.

All of the youngsters turned up in Viking dress but they were split into two groups to stage the battle between Viking invaders and the Saxon villagers and monks defending Lindisfarne.

On Monday pupils had a visit from Viking historian Thor Ewing, who talked about the Vikings at war, their food, instruments, dance and culture.

School literacy coordinator and Year 5 teacher Jane Peck said children have enjoyed their role play and playing Viking songs in their clarinet and saxophone music lessons.

Classroom lessions have had a wide-ranging historical and geographical emphasis.

Pupils have also been reading Voyage to Valhalla, by Robert Swindells, and have completed their own written projects on the Vikings.
