College given ‘satisfactory’ rating by Ofsted

PEELE Community College was given a ‘satisfactory’ rating from Ofsted with the inspectors saying the school has improved steadily over the last three years.

But, as Ofsted is changing its categories, the label will become ‘requires improvement’.

Ofsted inspectors say: “The quality of teaching is satisfactory and improving. There is a comprehensive programme of training, coaching and support to help teachers improve their skills, especially to secure good progress for students.

“Over half of teaching is now good and very little is inadequate.”

Headteacher Ian Charles said: “The report says our pupils are considerably below the national average on intake and up to the national average when they leave.

“I think when you read through the report, you can see much progress has been made over the last three years with the results and the range of activities going on in the school.”

Three quarters of Year 11 achieved five GCSE grades A*-C last year and more than half achieved that including English and maths.

Mr Charles said in 2011 the school had 122 pupils who had significantly better value added scores than all students nationally.

He said: “I was very pleased with the improvement we are making, however it isn’t good enough to be accredited as a ‘good’ and I think it is vital that we are.”

The headteacher says while the school has improved, it has not kept up with the changing landscape of Ofsted and feels the new label ‘requires improvement’ does not adequately reflect the strides made at Peele.
