Pupils at Sir John Gleed School in Spalding were treated to an ‘out of this world’ workshop and performance by former Birmingham Poet Laureate Dreadlock Alien.

Dreadlock Alien, AKA Richard Grant, is famous for attempting to find new, young audiences for poetry through the use of slam, hip hop and performance poetry.

Alison Copeland, teacher of English at the school, said: “The students absolutely loved it.

“I don’t think they expected the performance to be so good but as soon as he started performing using the register of the students in the room they were all up on their seats and cheering.

“Dreadlock Alien linked the performance in with our exam syllabus and taught the students various poetry techniques.

“He let the students explore poetry through beatbox and dance and got them to think of it as something exciting, not something boring.

“He had such a good time at the school he now wants to come back in the future, which we are very happy about – he is fantastic!”
