Popular Guardian gardening columnist Daphne Ledward has suggested a unique present to give loved ones this Christmas. Daphne is currently taking time off writing her weekly column as her husband John is suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. She is encouraging friends of John to donate £3 tothe Woodland Trust to plant a young sapling rather than a present – and thinks this may be a nice gift for others to give their loved ones too. “John is a lovely man, and it has hit us all very hard, to the extent that, although we will send Christmas cards this year, we have decided that presents, in the circumstances, are not really appropriate. “However, there is a way of giving a present that will both remind all his friends and relatives of John , and that is to donate a tree. “Every £3 donation will provide a young sapling to help towards creating a new wood somewhere in the UK, which is desperately short of forestation. “It wouldn’t take many £3 donations to create a young thicket .”
You can make your donation by ringing 0800 026 9650, or send a cheque to the Woodland Trust at Kempton Way, Grantham, Lincolnshire NG31 6LL.
