SPALDING people are urged to ‘get in quick’ if they want to snap up a rare chance to see Dublin band Diarmud O’Leary and The Bards playing on their doorstep.
St Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church has booked the band to celebrate the completion of repairs costing £60,000 following last year’s devastating fire that put the St Thomas’s Road church out of action for months.
Parish priest Father Jim Burke says the band has a huge following. But, so far, more than half the 150 tickets have been bought by people living miles away.
Father Jim said: “We really would like people from Spalding to come and celebrate with us.
“Requests are coming in from places like Much Hadam, Hertfordshire, and a folk club in Suffolk. We have also had enquiries from Leicester and Sleaford.”
The concert takes place at St Norbert’s Community Hall on Friday, October 21 and there will be a bar on the night. Tickets cost £15 and are available by calling 01775 722056.
Father Jim says Diarmud O’Leary and The Bards play some of the bigger UK venues and it is unusual for them to come to a town the size of Spalding. He says they are renowned for comedy hit songs but also play a wide range of more serious and contemporary material together with exciting arrangements of traditional Irish music.
