From Cowbit to Whaplode DRove


COWBIT Ladies Club will be meeting in the village hall next Wednesday at 7.30pm for a talk and slides about the Chain Bridge Forge Museum in Spalding, by Geoff Tatam. Everyone is welcome to hear about this museum which at one time was a blacksmiths that serviced boats at Spalding Port. Tea and biscuits will be available. Gedney Hill

HOLY Communion will be held in Holy Trinity Church this Sunday at 9.30am.


GOOD Companion’s Club has an outing on Tuesday which will take the form of a mystery tour. Usual pick-ups.

PLANS are going well for the Baptist Church flower and craft festival which is being staged on Saturday, Sunday and bank holiday Monday, August 23, 24 and 25, 10.30am- -4.30pm. Offers of baking would be appreciated, anyone interested can phone 01775 840185, 01775 821441 or 01775 840693.

A monthly Bible study organised by Gosberton Churches Together takes place in the Gosberton Methodist Church on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm. For more information contact the Rev Ian Walters on 01775 840694.

GOSBERTON Parochial Church Council thanks the many donors through Gift Aid. It can be by cheque, standing order, or weekly envelope and, if a tax payer, the church can recover 25p in the £1 from HMRC on completion of a Gift Aid form. Since April 2013 a new scheme (GASDS) has been started for charities to recover a similar amount on recorded small donations on the plate. Amounts not exceeding £20 in cash or envelopes from non tax payers can now be enhanced too up to a certain figure. The church treasurer is installing software to enable easier processing of these amounts for claims to help the church finances. There are still weekly envelopes available. Clough and 

GOSBERTON Risegate Silver Link Club held its meeting in the Risegate Methodist Church last week. Tina Sandall welcomed everyone. A birthday had been celebrated in the club, so cake and tea was enjoyed by the members. Bingo was played with caller Tina Sandall, helped by Margaret Staff. A raffle was organised by Margaret Staff. Afterwards the club enjoyed playing donkey derby. Members visited the Quadring Evergreen Club on Tuesday for a musical afternoon.

THE Friends of St Gilbert and St Hugh’s Church have raised £71.30 at a stall which they had at the recent Pinchbeck Carnival.

PEOPLE have been collecting used postage stamps and the collection has raised £9.30. Also the Friends of St Gilbert and St Hugh’s have received £110.45 from easy fundraising and easy search. It costs nothing at all for those searching and brings in money for the friends of the church. For more information contact Barbara Berridge on 01775 714918.

Long Sutton

Pode Hole

MEMBERS of Pode Hole Women’s Institute enjoyed a tasty treat at their August meeting. The speaker was Richard Ladbrook from Laddies Ice Cream of, Holbeach who took along three flavours of ice cream for members to taste. Richard is the fourth generation of ice cream makers and he gave an amusing and interesting talk about the development of the business. Laddies started with three flavours but they can now offer over 30 including some special savoury flavours made to order. Richard judged the monthly competition for a fancy sundae dish and the winners were Mrs Loveridge, Mrs Hilton and Mrs Mitchell. Birthday cards and chocolates were presented to Mrs Storey and Miss Scarlett. An invitation had been received from Gosberton WI to attend their meeting on September 9 when the speaker, George Waugh, will talk about his life as a butler. Five members signed up to take part in a quiz evening against other institutes at Swineshead Village Hall on September 5. After refreshments members enjoyed a quiz about sweets and biscuits organised by Mrs Smith and Mrs Berridge, followed by a raffle. The next meeting will be the harvest supper and auction on September 2 when the guest will be the Rev Peter Garland.

Saracen’s Head

SIXTEEN ladies attended the Flower Club on August 5. The arrangement was made by Pat Cook. Raffle winners were Mandy Buckbury, June Taylor, Brenda Munson, Pat Robinson, Joan Healey, Sandra Thompson, Yvonne Walsh, Pam Goddard, Pat Cook, Jo Harvey and Maurita Taylor.

THE snowball was not won at the bingo held on August 6.

OVER 60s Committee will meet on Monday, September 1, at 7.30pm in the village hall.

INTERESTED in carpet bowls? Go along to the village hall on Monday evenings, 7.30pm, to try your hand at social bowling and meet new friends.

Weston Hills

THERE will be a cake stall at Baytree Nurseries on Saturday, August 23, from 10am, in aid of repairs to St John’s Church tower.


THERE will be a craft fair in the village hall on bank holiday Monday, August 25, 10am-4pm. Refreshments available.

QUIZ night on Saturday, October 18, will be held in the village hall. Ticket price £7.50 including fish and chip supper. Tickets available from 01406 370775.

Whaplode Drove

THIS Sunday, beginning at 2.30pm, is St John the Baptist Church annual garden fete. This year the stalls, games, raffle and refreshments will be on the grassed area behind the Church Room, unless the weather is inclement, when all will be in the hall. Go along for a relaxing afternoon amongst friends.

WHAPLODE Drove Community Choir presents a Night at the Musicals on Saturday, September 6, in the Church Room, beginning at 7pm.

Tickets are available now, £3, to include refreshments of tea or coffee with home-made cakes.

The evening will be an enjoyable mix of songs from London shows spanning the last six decades or so, including solos, duets, ladies, gents and all choir choruses.
