Discover Holbeach’s hidden heritage

There is a chance to discover Holbeach’s hidden heritage next weekend.

The rare chance to explore the town’s underground Cold War bunker is part of Lincolnshire’s annual Heritage Open Days festival.

Local charity Heritage Lincolnshire will be running free guided tours next Sunday, September 11 – though booking is essential to avoid disappointment.

Visitors will be able to put on a hard hat and descend the ladder into a recent but almost forgotten chapter in the county’s history.

There will be displays about the site and the work of the Royal Observer Corps volunteers who used to monitor in case of nuclear attack.

Many of the original instruments and equipment they used have survived and will be available for people to see.

There will even be the chance to have a go with a real air raid siren and to talk to one of the local volunteers who manned the post during the Cold War.
