A HOLBEACH soldier will be spending Christmas on the frontline this year.
Lance Corporal Daniel Matson (25) is currently on duty in Afghanistan with 33 Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), which is based at Woodbridge, Suffolk.
Daniel will only just miss Christmas at home though as he is set to return to Afghanistan just days beforehand, after enjoying two weeks of leave.
He joked: “I’ll probably end up spending Christmas Day shivering somewhere.
“We do our best to make the day a bit special in the remote locations. Just getting the Christmas parcels through makes all the difference.”
However, it isn’t all bad for Daniel who is set to have Christmas dinner served to him by the officers, as army tradition dictates.
Daniel joined the army in 2003 after having attended the George Farmer Technology and Language College and is now a member of the Counter Improvised Explosive Disposal Task Force Search Team and is one of the soldiers that locate the IED’s. He is due home from his tour in April.
He added: “I hope everyone back in Spalding is doing OK and look forward to seeing you soon in the new year. Have a great Christmas”.
