A voluntary car scheme in Crowland is busier than ever.
In the past year the charity has had 180 calls from people asking to be driven to hospital appointments, doctors’ surgeries and the shops.
Volunteer Graham Searle said this figure was far more than when the scheme, which is based in the library, was first established in 1995.
He said: “We have more volunteer drivers now and word of mouth goes a long way.
“There are also more Saturday appointments at hospitals, so that keeps us busy too.
”We are here to help.”
Christina Todd will have been a volunteer driver for a year next month.
She said: “I retired and did nothing for two years, but then a friend told me about Crowland Cares.
“It’s been brilliant and rewarding in so many ways. I have made many new friends and I know I am helping people by taking them to appointments through just talking to them and being with them.
”I’d certainly recommend it.”
As well as the car scheme, Crowland Cares helps the community by providing an information service, helping residents fill forms and organising a number of social activities.
Volunteers can be contacted at the library in Hall Street on Monday to Friday mornings or by calling 01733 211797.
