Vandals bring havoc to village playing field

Vandalism at a village field could see police seeking a dispersal order like the one used to deter a hotbed of crime and disorder at The Vista in Spalding.

The Memorial Playing Field, off Bridge Road, Sutton Bridge, has been targeted a number of times over the last few months.

Incidents included:

• An attempt to set a picnic table on fire

• Signs ripped down – including a police notice on anti-social behaviour

• A motorcyclist riding around on football pitches

Parish council clerk Suzanne England said one of the latest incidents involved removal of the post that secures the gate to the car park.

The parish council has on-site CCTV and a couple of incidents have been recorded.

Police are asking residents to call them straight away, when they see vandalism happening, so they can catch someone in the act.

The Curlew Centre is in the grounds of Memorial Park and the public loos at the side of the building have been out of action several times since Christmas because of damage caused by vandals.

Sgt Gareth Boxall told the parish council that police could seek a dispersal order like the one in Spalding if problems persist, but warned there is “a reasonably high threshold” for one to be made.

• A dispersal order means police can order groups of people suspected of anti-social behaviour to move on and not return for 24 hours.
