TWO young arsonists who caused serious damage to a town landmark have been brought to justice thanks to Crowland’s CCTV system.
The teenagers were caught on camera as they laid a blanket over one of the town’s historical stones under Trinity Bridge and set it alight.
The incident happened on April 16 just after 2.30am and thanks to CCTV footage the Spalding pair were caught.
A 16-year-old boy was given a reprimand as it was his first offence, while his 17-year-old accomplice appeared before magistrates last Wednesday charged with arson.
He was given a six-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £200 compensation to English Heritage.
PC Nigel Smith, beat manager for Crowland, said: “These stones were placed under the bridge more than 100 years ago and to put a blanket on one and set it alight is nothing more than mindless vandalism.”
The boys cannot be named because they are under 18.
