WHAPLODE’S High Road speed camera caught the same motorist speeding twice within ten days because he didn’t know the limit had dropped from 40mph to 30mph.

Lee Stearne went through the camera at 38mph in a Nissan motor van on February 20 and then at 36mph in a Peugeot on March 1, Spalding magistrates heard.

Stearne told the court he used to go to work that way, when the limit was 40mph, but then started going on a different route.

He said he was speeding because he was used to the limit being 40.

Presiding magistrate Sally Ruttley said: “That’s what comes of driver awareness.”

Stearne (31), of Burcroft Road, Wisbech, was fined £60 with a £15 victim surcharge on the first offence and must pay a £60 fine, £43 costs and a £15 victim surcharge for the second.

His licence was endorsed with three penalty points on each offence.

He pleaded guilty to both.
