Smashed car window in a rage and grabbed stranger

A MAN in a drunken rage smashed a car window and grabbed a complete stranger sitting inside.

Stephen Hicks was waiting in his Ford Fiesta outside his girlfriend's house in Frognall, Deeping St James, on December 29 when he saw two people arguing loudly further up the road.

Mr Hicks locked his car as one of the men, 25-year-old Darren Adams, acting drunk and aggressive, came closer.

Adams then punched through the driver's side window and grabbed Mr Hicks, Spalding magistrates heard on Thursday.

Mr Hicks lay across the front seat so that Adams could not reach him.

Adams then continued to shout loudly and abusively as Mr Hicks made it inside his girlfriend's house.

In a statement given to police, Mr Hicks said he had never met or had any contact with Adams, who is a chef in Peterborough and lives in Broadgate Lane, Deeping St James.

As a result of the incident, Mr Hicks was left with tiny shards of glass in his eye from the smashed window, though no permanent damage was done.

The damage to the car was estimated at 115.50.

Adams, who has a history of assault matters, pleaded guilty to criminal damage and breaching the Public Order Act by using threatening, violent or abusive behaviour.

Andrew Goldsborough, defending, said Adams apologised profusely for his behaviour and has made it clear he was willing to pay for the damage.

He said Adams was in a bad state at the time, having recently split up with his girlfriend, and he fully admitted he had "had one beer too many" and flew into a rage.

Magistrates ordered Adams to pay 215.50 compensation to Mr Hicks for the criminal damage charge.

He was also fined 215 and ordered to pay a 15 victim surcharge.

For the public order offence Adams was fined a further 215 and ordered to pay 60 costs.
