Police warning over ‘Mediterranean men’

LINCOLNSHIRE Police have issued a warning after reports of men of “Mediterranean appearance” asking people for money.

Reports have been received from members of the public in the Holbeach, Boston, Spalding and Bourne areas of “Mediterranean” men approaching them asking for cash.

The men are asking for petrol money to get them to an airport or London (£40 to £50) in return for jackets or watches.

A police spokesman told the Free Press this afternoon (Saturday): “Have you been approached by one of these males?

“Can you give us details of the cars in which they are travelling in?

“If you have or can give us any further intelligence then please ring 101 to give us that vital piece of information that will enable us to locate the whereabouts of these males.

“If you are approached, please do not enter into any discussions but simply walk away or enter a local shop if possible.

“If you are located in a vehicle, please ensure that you keep all doors locked and windows closed for your own safety.”

Ring Lincolnshire Police on 101 any time or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

I also went to Paris recently and was shocked how the train station was full of Romanian gypsies. Their trick was to bump into passengers, mainly tourists and pick their pockets in the process or to ask for money for the babies they were carrying. Unfortunately parts of London and other major cities in this country are also now being swamped by these people. Maybe they have now found their way to Spalding! Something more for us all to look forward to!

This happened to me about a year ago. I stopped to answer my phone coming back from Stamford. I had just pulled into a lay-by when I saw a car pull in behind me. Didn't think anything of it until I heard a tapping on my passenger window. A man who looked either Romanian or Turkish was 'crying' and asking me to open window. Stupidly I did and he said his child had just been rushed to Manchester hospital and that he needed petrol money to see him. He asked for £40 and I said that I didn't have any money on me. He then put on even more tears and took off his gold rings and handed them to me. I told him I didn't want his rings. I felt really sorry for him as I thought he was genuine so handed him £5 note I had near me and quickly wound the window up. I looked in my rearview mirror and saw him go back to the car where I then noticed two other men sat. I then felt very scared as realised that I had probably been scammed and felt very vulnerable being alone even though it was in middle of day. It was only when I got home and realised how stupid I was to open window as something far more serious could have happened. I thought about reporting it to police but I felt it was too petty at the time but it has certainly made me cautious about stopping in any lay-bys when on my own!

They sound like the final edition to complete the warped Spalding utopia idea that some self hating people that post on this site have

This scam is not that new to be fair - I had one come in the gate not so long ago before Christmas, said he was 'from Italy a few days ago*' and was going back straight away but 'needed petrol money' to go back*.. So far, so good.. but the * is to point out he was driving a 09 plate ENGLISH registered car, so puts a clunker to the idea he had 'come from Italy a few days ago' idea and going 'straight back' plus the watches he offered me were el cheapo market stuff worth a few pounds, if that, but at the time I thought no more of it but it seem hethey are still out there operating..
