Spalding cyclists have been told to “light up or pay up” after an early morning police operation to tackle the issue of bikes without lights.

Operation Oatmeal was carried out on Pinchbeck Road yesterday morning and also focused on the problem of cyclists using the pavement instead of the road.

Fifteen tickets for cycling offences were issued throughout the morning – but those stopped for having no lighst were given the opportunity to visit the police station within a set period of time to demonstrate they had purchased lights.

Insp Jim Tyner said: “We focus on education as well as enforcement and I would prefer to see cyclists spend money on a good quality set of lights rather than a fixed penalty notice.”

Operation Oatmeal is the latest in a series aimed at improving road safety.
