Man escapes prison after police assaults

A man walked free after appearing in court for sentence on three assaults on police and assaulting a woman PCSO by kicking her in the face.

Daniel Bristow (36), of Rowan Avenue, Spalding, attacked officers in three separate incidents – and three officers were hurt while he was on bail for punching a sergeant.

He was given five months prison on each of four assaults, to run concurrently, but magistrates suspended the prison term for a year.

Bristow must be supervised by probation for a year and attend a six-month alcohol treatment programme.

Presiding magistrate Richard Spinks said: “These are very serious matters. You are very lucky to be walking away, Mr Bristow.”

Bristow was also ordered to pay £50 compensation to each officer, Sgt Gareth Wigham, PC Stephen Robinson, PC Thomas Hocking and PCSO Kirsty Taylor.

Jim Clare, prosecuting, said police went to an address at Morton on June 17 when Bristow had been drinking and behaving aggressively.

He was content when officers gave him a lift to another address, but later became agitated. He threw a “short jabbing punch”, which connected just below Sgt Wigham’s right eye.

PCs Hocking and Robinson were called to West Street, Bourne, on July 20 when Bristow was causing problems.

Bristow was kicking out and one officer received a grazed shin and a kick to his jaw while the second had a glancing blow to the side of his head and a kick to his groin.

PCSO Taylor was kicked in the face and “felt my nose get crushed” as she assisted an arrest during a domestic incident at Bristow’s home on September 6.

Bristow admitted the assaults and pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly on September 6, for which he was given no separate penalty.

Solicitor Carrie Simson, mitigating, said Bristow accepted responsibility for his actions but the assaults arose from his drink problem and he needed help with that.
