A pub landlord escaped serious injury after being showered with glass by vandals who smashed a window during closing-up time in Spalding last weekend.

Ben Williams was locking up at The Punchbowl in New Road on Sunday when someone punched through the front door window some time between 12.30am and 1.30am, sending shards of glass into the landlord’s face.

Mr Williams’ father and manager of The Punchbowl, Pete Williams, described the attack as “random and completely out of the blue.”

He said: “A group of friends came into the pub several times, just wandering around and not buying drinks.

“They were asked to leave and they did quite peacefully.

“But one of them became irate and as Ben was locking the door, they started punching through the windows and Ben ended up with shards of glass in his mouth and face.

“He just managed to close his eyes in time because a paramedic said he was very lucky after finding shards of glass on his eyelids.

“It was a really nice night until this random attack which came completely out of the blue.”

Inspector Jim Tyner, community policing inspector for Spalding, said a 32-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the attack but he has since been eliminated from their enquiries which are ongoing.

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
