Burglars blamed for Jim’s disappearance

A SPALDING woman blames burglars for making her cat too terrified to live at home and running away.

The 53-year-old mother of two, who asked not to be named, said burglars smashed a big double-glazed window close to the bed where her black and white cat, Jim (pictured right), used to sleep.

The break-in happened on January 5 and the mum spent days trying to calm the two-and-half-year old neutered male.

She said: “He was traumatised by the burglary. It took me a good two weeks to try and get him in the house. As soon as he was in the house, he was scratching to go out again. He was what I call ‘stalking’ – walking low to the floor.

“I have spoken to several vets and they say it is quite common after a burglary.”

The mum last saw her cat at 6am on January 23 and has been circulating his picture in a bid to find him, but has so far drawn a blank.

She is now appealing to Spalding Guardian readers to help.

Vet Wayne Smith, who owns the Alder veterinary surgery in Bourne Road, Spalding, said pets can easily be traumatised by incidents such as burglaries or even when a home-owner gets the builders in.

He said: “The house is their safety area and if anything threatens that they don’t feel safe in their own environment any more.”

Mr Smith said runaway pets often don’t go far away.

He said owners can try to calm traumatised pets by installing pheremone defusers or using food additives.
