ARMED SIEGE TRAGEDY: ‘Barry a real gentleman who loved family’

THE man found dead at his home in Sutton St James has been described as a “gentleman who would always talk about his family”.

Barry Horspool, who has been named locally, was found at his home in Chapelgate following 11 hours of negotiations with armed police officers.

Mr Horspool, believed to be in his 60s, is understood to have been making threats with a gun.

His wife, Barbara, was said to have been out when the incident began just before lunchtime on Tuesday.

Residents in the village have said Mr Horspool was wheelchair-bound and had suffered from ill-health. He was often seen in the village riding a mobility scooter.

Hairdresser Jeanette Kidd, owner of Jeanette’s in Chapelgate, said: “He used to come and talk about his family. He was a real gentleman. It’s a bit of a shock.”

Another villager described Mr Horspool as “Mr Sutton St James”, who had been born at the house where he was found dead. They said he had lived in the village all of his life.

Mr Horspool was a retired farm worker.

Neighbour Tom Sutton said he had known Mr Horspool all his life and said he was “a rum” person.

He spoke of his sadness at the incident, saying: “This is something out of the blue. You’d never expect it to happen here, not with someone you know.”

The Sun newspaper claimed that the incident had been sparked by a review of Mr Horspool’s gun licence.

The paper reported that friend Gary Richardson (46) said: “I used to go shooting with Barry but as far as I am aware he was an ordinary bloke.”

A post-mortem by Home Office pathologists was expected to be carried out yesterday.
