Councillors in Sutton Bridge have thrown out a request for an off-lead, dog exercise area at Arnie Broughton Walk.

Members heard 6ft high wire mesh fencing, posts, a gate and other costs would add up to around £1,300 – and there would be ongoing maintenance bills.

Council vice-chairman Michael Booth said: “I am a dog lover, but I don’t think the parish council should be providing areas for people to exercise their dogs.

“We have got more important things to do.”

Coun Booth was also concerned about potential problems arising if one dog attacks another.

He said: “This has happened in other areas where the dog has had to be put down.

“I don’t think we should entertain it.”

Councillors heard there was an off-lead dog area in Holbeach, used daily by 20 pet owners, but unanimously rejected the idea for Sutton Bridge.
