Concerns over litter in Long Sutton

PARISH councillors at Long Sutton are concerned about McDonald’s rubbish being strewn along Vicarage Lane and Wisbech Road towards the BP garage.

The issue was raised at the council meeting on Thursday by Coun Pauline Dickinson, who was sitting opposite the Long Sutton McDonald’s boss, Coun Richard Hyde.

Clerk Karen Treacher said if the rubbish was on the highway, the district council would clear it but if it was in the dyke it was the responsibility of the landowner.

Coun Dickinson replied: “It’s in the dyke and it’s on the verge.”

Coun Hyde told the meeting: “It’s a social problem.”

He was keen to see a litter-picking group put together and said: “If we get local children involved I will provide free refreshments.”

Coun Dickinson said there was also rubbish on the footpath next to the Spar shop.

Chairman Coun John Clarey said: “Personally I think we ought to speak to the shop owners if it’s their rubbish.
