There was no honeymoon following Alan Porter and Angela Newton’s surprise wedding at Woodlands Hotel in Spalding on Sunday.

The following day Angela was up early for a meeting at South Holland District Council, where she has been a district councillor for 40 years, an achievement marked by the presentation of a ruby ring by council leader Gary Porter.

The couple have been together for 37 years and have a son, Andrew, who is married to Helen, and they have a six-year-old son, Joseph. Alan has three grown up daughters from a previous marriage.

It was family members who urged the couple to get married, but Angela says when they were running AP Auctions and AP Sales they never had the time.

She said: “I think as we’ve had more time together since I retired about 18 months ago we thought we would get married. It makes sense for succession planning.”

The couple know so many people that drawing up a guest list would have been a difficult task, so it was family only when 32 people gathered for the wedding ceremony and meal. Photo: SG180514-131TW
