As part of the National Citizen Service, 12 young people and their mentors started 30 hours’ community work in collaboration with Tulip Radio supporting Spalding in Bloom.
After a bag packing day at Sainsbury’s, they weeded various driveways and fronts of businesses along the judges’ route. Work also started on clearing up the streets, where proactive and helpful social action host, Jan, from Tulip Radio, showed the group the route that would need weeding and litter-picking. As group member Rhianna said, ‘We want to prove to adults we can look after our town.’ The group showed their artistic side on a commemorative canvas.
The group litter picked the streets of Spalding, weeded the flower beds, and were grateful for complimentary jacket potatoes from The Lincolnshire Oven and tea and cake from Flowers ‘n’ Things as a reward for their hard work in the scorching heat.
There was even time to plant flowers in the newly cleared Tulip Radio driveway and the group ended the day clearing the area around St Paul’s Church as well as beautifully arranging an array of flowers to give out for donations the following day.
Thanks to their excellent team-work and unwavering motivation, they raised £461.24 for next year’s Spalding in Bloom.
