NORMANDY veteerans Eric Toynton, Philip Milton and Derek (Jim) Camping visited the Peele Community College in Long Sutton last week.

They met with eight students from years 9 and 10 who had recently visited the Normandy battlefields.

Over tea and cake, Eric Philip and Jim shared their experiences of the June 1944 invasion, which included landing in a glider to secure the canal near Pegasus Bridge and piloting landing craft on to the beaches on D-Day itself.

Students were able to show veterans a video of their visit as well as read out a poem they had composed, which will soon feature in the Normandy Veterans’ Association at the Anglia Motel in Fleet.

The veterans and students found the afternoon rewarding and plan to continue the association with mutual visits.
