WHAT’S bad news for short mat bowls players is good news for two local charities.

The accumulated funds of the Fens Short Mat Bowls League, which has folded now that the number of clubs taking part has dwindled to two and four teams, was given away to charity on Wednesday.

Fens Short Mat Bowls League treasurer Peter Butler said: “We have been doing it for a number of years but it was not worth carrying on the league so we thought the funds we had accumulated could go to charity.”

The £1,000 was split between two charities, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Support.
