WORK at the fire-damaged St Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church in Spalding is set to be completed by Easter.
The church interior has been cleaned and redecorated and a replacement oak screen is ready to be installed.
Damaged statues have been repaired and a new image of The Immaculate Conception – the main patron of the church – will be added when repair works to the main body of the church building are completed.
The bill runs into thousands of pounds but the final cost remains unknown as items keep being added to the bill.
Parish priest Father Jim Burke said all of the existing floor tiles will now have to be replaced because the original tiles have been discontinued and the church does not have enough to replace them all.
The fire started four weeks before Christmas and Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said it was caused by a candle left smouldering.
Most of the fire damage was just inside the main church – in front of the lobby – but smoke damaged everything inside the building.
The church plans to hold services of celebration when the work is completed.
Regular services are being held in the church and that means the adjoining community hall is being used again by regular groups such as The Sunshine Club and WeightWatchers as well as for concert dates by visiting artists.
