Holbeach centenarian Lilian Gate will remember the day she turned 100 for the rest of her life after a family get-together to mark the occasion.

The retired GP’s assistant shared her birthday with some of her three children, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren at the home of daughter Sheila Hance in Spalding.

Lilian said: “It was very special because most of my family was here and it was a chance for me to express my grateful thanks to my daughter Sheila who has been looking after me so well during the last few years.”

In the year Lilian was born, King George V was on the throne, Herbert Asquith was Prime Minister, the first colour feature film was shown in Britain and famous Welsh poet Dylan Thomas was born.

Lilian was born in Littleworth, near Deeping St Nicholas, before moving to live with her family on a farm in Whaplode St Catherine.

Later, she became involved in activities at Holbeach and Spalding Baptist Churches which she still attends now.
