ABOUT 70 people turned out to join in the celebrations for the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion at Kirton on Saturday.

Kirton and District Royal British Legion organised a concert at the town hall, with Kirton Brass Band performing popular tunes from the war years, as well as more modern stuff, such as a medley of Abba songs and the theme tune to Private Ryan.

Branch secretary and treasurer Robert Allen said the concert, as well as a tombola held earlier, raised money for the Poppy Appeal and welfare funds supporting injured soldiers.

“It was an excellent evening and everybody was very pleased,” said Robert, who said that about £280 had been raised from the event, on top of the £122 raised from the tombola.
