MEMBERS of Spalding branch of The Royal Lincolnshire Regiment were in Sainsbury’s on Saturday and collected £589.50 to help build a memorial to the men of the county’s own regiment.

The Royal Lincolnshire Regiment – which earned no fewer than ten Victoria Crosses – merged with another regiment in 1961.

The ranks of The Lincolns are dwindling but a number of the regiment’s soldiers who served in some of the fiercest battles of the Second World War still survive, including Spalding man Tom Fowler (92).

Plans have been drawn up for a £10,000 memorial to go on The Lincolns’ old base on the site of the Sobraon Barracks at Lincoln.
