Help ailing veterans in fight for compensation

Ailing nuclear test veterans will be holding a collection in Spalding at the weekend to raise awareness of their continued fight for compensation.

Douglas Hern (76) will be one of the members of the British Nuclear Test Veterans’ Association (BNTVA) charity at Sainsburys on Saturday and Sunday seeking the public’s help.

They are hoping to raise money to join the Lord Mayor’s Show later in the year in London to raise awareness of their plight.

Mr Hern, of Bell Lane, Moulton, and fellow veterans claim they have been left with varying health problems, including rare cancers and skin defects, after being exposed to nuclear bomb testing on Christmas Island in the 1950s.

He witnessed five detonations while serving with the Navy and in an article in Tuesday’s Lincolnshire Free Press speaks of the horrifying experience that has left him and fellow veterans still fighting.
