Councillor Angela Newton was a recent visitor to our studios. Angela has been a district councillor since 1973, the final remaining councillor of the original intake when Spalding Borough Council became South Holland District Council.
She is the Leader of the Independent Group on SHDC and in May was re-elected to Lincolnshire County Council as part of the Lincolnshire Independent Group.
Angela is heavily involved with Spalding in Bloom, and we discussed this year’s competition in great length.
Angela played a big role in organising the town’s efforts but was most disappointed with another Silver Gilt award, missing out on Gold by just one point.
We spoke to Angela about the demise of the Spalding Flower Parade and the Food Festival, and the possible amalgamation of the two into the People’s Parade, and we are all hopeful that an event of some description will take place next year.
Angela is the chair of our Twin Town Committee – the Friends of Speyer. She told us of her role and the connections forged between Speyer and Spalding over the years.
We also discussed Angela’s role as chair of the Johnson Community Hospital League of Friends and also South Holland Parish Voluntary Car Scheme.
