A MAKESHIFT bin has appeared on Spalding’s riverbank in an attempt to crack down on litter louts.

A bag had been tied to a bench on London Road with a sign asking people to put their rubbish inside.

Coun Graham Dark said: “It says a lot when people have got to resort to that sort of thing. That’s not even the worst spot for litter but it reflects what’s going on in the town.

“My own consistent view is that enforcement action should be taken to make sure that we deal robustly with litter louts.”

South Holland District Council said it would not support residents taking matters into their own hands.

A spokesman said: “We were unaware of the action that a resident has taken at this riverside site and, while it was undoubtedly done with the best of intentions, it is not something we would support residents doing on a regular basis. If we do not know the location of public litter bins we are unable to collect the refuse regularly.”
