Traders are reporting a strong start to a four-day campaign encouraging people to support independent shops in Spalding.

Independents’ Day is taking advantage of the public holiday in the USA and persuading residents to spend their money in the town, rather than online, with major chains or away from Spalding altogether.

Several retailers confirmed that the public response has been overwhelmingly positive and could lead to more permanent initiatives with fellow traders.

Nikki Austin, owner of Austin John Interiors in The Crescent and co-ordinator on Independents’ Day, said: “It’s going brilliantly and we’re getting a lot of positive feedback from retailers and shoppers.

“Everybody is so much more upbeat and a lot of retailers have had a much-needed boost.”

Katie Freeman of Hills Department Store in Broad Street said: “I think it’s important that we all celebrate our independence because the high street would be a very dull place without us.”
