Long Sutton Parish Council is to take up the concerns of a former member over a site considered suitable for new housing in the town.

Land off the A17 between Seagate Road and Wisbech Road has been identified as one of 16 “potential housing sites” in Long Sutton for development over the next 20 years.

But ex-parish councillor Pauline Dickinson of Long Sutton claimed that Seagate Road was incapable of coping with some of the 324 new homes estimated to be needed in the town between now and 2036, according to the South East Lincolnshire Local Plan.

During July’s parish council meeting, Mrs Dickinson said: “There are plans to build 250 properties on land between Seagate Road and Wisbech Road, with two entries to the proposed site.

“One would be from Seagate Road and the other from Wisbech Road, but I believe that Seagate Road isn’t capable of coping with extra traffic.

“It’s a narrow road, there’s a very deep dyke on one side, cars are often parked on it and the land itself is within metres of the lowest point in Long Sutton which floods during rainfall.

“Surely building 250 extra properties will add to this problem and, in my opinion, I don’t think it’s at all suitable for 300 more cars.”

Parish council chairman Coun Charles Moore said: “We understand there is a lot of concern about the Local Plan and we want to articulate those concerns to South Holland District Council.

“We understand that houses have to be built, but you have to be realistic about where they can be built in such a beautiful town like Long Sutton.”
