A Spalding couple are making efforts to get the town eating more healthily by growing their enterprise from a market stall to a greengrocer’s.

Shelly (37) and Steven Andrew (42) are behind The Grocers on Francis Street which sells a range of locally-sourced fruit, vegetables and salads.

The couple are no strangers to market day shoppers in Spalding and Crowland where they already run stalls on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays as SJA Produce.

But the opportunity to open a shop proved irresistible and Shelly now runs The Grocers with help from a team of volunteers who step in whenever she is out delivering produce to customers throughout South Holland and The Deepings.

She said: “My husband spends a lot of time every week buying produce that we deliver to different customers and sell on our market stalls.

“So when the shop in Spalding became available, we saw it as an opportunity too good to miss.

“Since it opened a few weeks ago, a lot of people have been coming in after smelling the freshness of our fruit and vegetables from the street.

“We’ve gone for a very traditional look with the fittings in the shop and people have loved the style and quality of it, as well as our prices.

“Our aim is to build up our customer base and become the first choice for homes, schools and businesses.”
