A new era has started at Hawkins Home Hardware, Holbeach, after a change of name and ownership.

Andrew Hawkins, whose father Len first opened the shop on the corner of Victoria Street and Chapel Street in 1953, is retiring more than 45 years after succeeding his dad as owner and handing over to father-and-son team Steve and Matt Tonks of Ely.

From today, the shop is now Tonwood Home Hardware but Andrew, Steve and Matt are all keen to assure loyal customers that the same attention to detail and friendly staff are to continue at the shop.

Andrew said: “Without question, retiring from Hawkins Home Hardware has been the most difficult decision I’ve ever made.

“I wanted to be sure that the staff who have been loyal to the business for many years, some approaching 20 years with the business, would be safeguarded with a new proprietor.

“I also wanted the shop to perpetuate for the town as we get so many kind remarks from the general public about us and our staff.”

Steve and Matt are joined by Liz Tonks, Steve’s wife, and while they have come with ideas of how to take the shop forward, they are determined to find out what customers want from Tonwood Home Hardware first.

“Both myself and Matt together have been working in hardware stores of one form or another for more than 20 years.

“Therefore, we’ve got an idea of what is needed at the shop and because of our backgrounds, we have quite a few ideas about what we want to do.

“We clearly want to carry on supplying and supporting the customers that Andrew has served over the years, so they will see a lot of familiar faces at the shop.

“One of the key things we needed assurance about was that buying groups like Home Hardware, which has worked closely with Andrew over the years, were still prepared to continue supplying Tonwood.”

The shop name itself comes from the first three letters of Tonks, along with Liz’s maiden name of Wood.

Matt said: “We’re bringing together all our experience to make sure this store carries on forward.”
