The latest concept in “popping to the local” has arrived in Spalding with the opening of a new micropub.

The Prior’s Oven in Sheep Market is the idea of business partners Charlie Rawlings, of Weston Hills, and Nathan Marshall, of Moulton Chapel.

Since opening on Tuesday, the micropub has drawn customers with its traditional approach to having a pint which means no TVs, jukeboxes, fruit machines, dartboards or snooker tables.

Charlie, a former farm contractor and builder, said: “We’re the first micropub in Lincolnshire based on the principle of serving real ale, locally-crafted cider and wine from Chile.

“But we’re aiming to have English wines in to serve alongside the malt whisky, spirits and fruit drinks that we sell now.

“At the moment, we’re trying to offer customer at least four or five different makes of real ale that are from Tydd St Giles, Oakham and other areas not far from Spalding.”

The micropub concept, which also includes a complete ban on lager, is thought to have been pioneered in Kent in 2005 and there are now more than 30 in the UK.

Charlie said: “With a micropub, it’s all about conversation and a passion for real ale which I’ve had for years.

“It’s about serving true beer to nice people who want to talk to each other.”
