Pensioner’s warning about mobility scam

A Spalding pensioner with a life-threatening condition is warning people not to buy from a mobility products firm after losing £200.

Terence Churchman (74), of Hampton Close, is trying to recover cash from Nottingham-based Meadow Vale Group for a mobility scooter that he decided not to buy.

Mr Churchman, who has Motor Neurone Disease, originally agreed to buy a £3,000 scooter from the firm but was told not to by his family.

He said: “I had a phone call from Meadow Vale in January and agreed for them to come round and talk to me about buying a mobility scooter.

“They seemed genuine when they agreed to take my car in part-exchange but they also asked me to pay £200 up front.

“When my family came up from the south of England to visit, they convinced me not to do it and I decided not to take the contract up.”

Mr Churchman claimed that he wrote to Meadow Vale within the seven-day period for cancelling contracts but has yet to get his money back.

He said: “I don’t want other people in Spalding to fall for what I did.”

Meadow Vale Group could not be contacted for a comment but a Lincolnshire County Council spokeswoman said: “Mr Churchman should get in touch with Trading Standards on 01522 782341 and officers can then discuss with him what the options are.”
