A number of parish councils are to discuss concerns over a possible increase in lorries using the proposed biomass plant driving through their villages.

Sutton St James Parish Council is inviting other councils, including Holbeach and Whaplode, to consider restricted access routes for HGVs, although a meeting date has not yet been set.

Jennifer Cockerton, clerk for Sutton St James Parish Council, claimed that up to 160 HGVs could be driving in and out of the plant over a 24-hour period.

She said: “There has long been a problem with HGV traffic routing unnecessarily through villages in this area and we have complained to the port authorities and Lincolnshire County Council Highways Department.

“The proposed biomass plant at Wingland has highlighted these problems and we feel it would be sensible to have a joint meeting with neighbouring parish councils as many villages in South Holland suffer similarly.

“We would like to see the ever-growing number of HGVs made to use roads like the A16.”
